Thailand
Thailand’s name is officially the Kingdom of Thailand and was
formerly known as Siam. The country is located in South East Asia and
borders to Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Malaysia.
Thailand is a fairly well developed nation, certainly better
developed than its neighbors Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.
This level of development means that although Thailand is still far
behind the Western world in the form of public amenities,
telecommunications, public services and transportation, it does still
provide every modern convenience required to live a full, comfortable
and modern life.
Thai culture and history are fascinating, and the local people can be
friendly. Indeed, Thailand has earned the title Land of Smiles, and
there is good reason for this. Certainly no other nation in South
East Asia has such a reputation for the good hearts of its people.
From simple rice farmers in lazy Isaan, to taxi drivers in busy
Bangkok, you can be assured of being greeted with a smile and a wai.
Thailand’s population is approximately 64 million people. The
climate in Thailand contains 3 seasons. Hot season (Mar-Jun), rain
season (Jul-Oct) and dry season (Nov-Feb) with an average of 30 C
throughout the year. The natural resources found in Thailand are tin,
rubber, natural gas, tungsten, tantalum, timber, lead, fish, gypsum,
lignite, fluorite, arable land. The country experienced a rapid
economic growth between 1985 and 1996, with tourism being a
significant factor in the Thai economy.
The main religion in Thailand is Buddhism (95%) followed by Muslim
(4,6%). The country’s flag shows 5 horizontal stripes in the
colours red, white and blue. Red stands for people, white for
Buddhism and blue for the monarchy.
