What
position do you hold at Internships Thailand?
I am the Internship Placement Manager, which basically means I am the mediator between the interns and the host companies. When we receive an application, I will assess it and contact the applicant to invite him / her for an interview. During the interview I will ask various questions and also explain the program and Thailand in more detail. When the applicant enrolls with us, I will match his / her requirements to the open opportunities of our host companies. Then I follow up with the host companies to place the intern and support the arrangements for the visa, accommodation, transportation and so on.

I
also keep in regular contact with all the interns across the country.
As we are based in Phuket, I visit the interns during their
internships and conduct appraisals with the interns and their
supervisors in the host companies.
Once a month, I also coordinate a social activity day with all the interns (in Phuket) to show them the island, go to an event (for networking in hospitality) and catch up on the interns’ experiences, needs and questions.

What
has your career path been like so far?
My career started in Thailand in 2003 when I worked for a local incoming travel agency representing international travel agents. I had fallen in love with the country when I came to visit (as a tourist) and was lucky to be at the right place at the right time. After three years in Krabi, I moved back to my home country, Germany, to studyas a Tourism Marketing Management Assistant.

With
the aim to spend my life in Thailand, I returned in 2007 and found a
placement as a Management Trainee in Sales & Marketing with the
Holiday Inn Resort, Phi Phi Islands. There,
I was promoted to Sales & Web Marketing Manager after a few
months into the internship. I spent a total of two years working in
hotels on Phi Phi Island.
In
2010 I moved to Phuket and worked as freelance teacher for three
years until I joined Internships Thailand early February 2013. My
passions are Thai culture and language, meeting new people with
multinational backgrounds and working closely with the Hospitality &
Tourism Industry.

How
can an internship in Thailand help interns prepare for the job
market?
There
are several advantages in having an internship in Thailand:
With
our help, interns are shown opportunities in international 5 star
hotels in a tropical country that they would probably never have
dreamed of working in.
Thailand
is one of the most hospitable countries in the world and is known for
its customer-oriented mind and curiousness towards other cultures.
For
our host companies, taking in an intern means having the opportunity
to train an intern in Thai hospitality, to see how well educated and
skilled international interns are and, of course, have the
opportunity to offer the intern a career as full time employee after
the internship (which has happened to our interns in several cases).
Our
host companies and Internships Thailand provide references and
certificates to the interns which are not only an attractive addition
to the resume but also beneficial for future career opportunities.
What
is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering interning
abroad in Thailand?
With
the unlimited availability of information on the internet, one can be
overwhelmed by the stories you hear about Thailand. So my piece of
advice is: Do your research, check your sources and ask as many
questions as you can think of; make your own experience, don't live
someone else's.
Anything
else you would like to share?
There
are many stories and experiences I would love to share, so don't be
shy to contact me and ask whatever you would like to know.
